A Call for Bike Commuters I’m part of Cornell’s Campus Bicycle– Pedestrian Committee and also an employee who commutes to work via bicycle. Our group is trying to start a Commuter Club, aimed at providing benefits and recognition to current cyclist commuters as well as incentives to others to begin commuting by bike. We are looking for input from commuters so that we can structure a club that people will take interest in and that will be both motivating and rewarding. I’d appreciate any input that FLCC members might have. For example, who commutes to Cornell and what kind of benefits would you like to receive? We’ve tossed around ideas ranging from discounts at local bike shops and free locker space on campus to t-shirts and "route sharing" (a way to connect commuters who are already using the same routes). Also, how might we get others to ride to work? What are the obstacles, and what could we provide that would encourage others to cycle in? We’ve thought about emergency rides home and a newsletter highlighting bike-safety concerns, health issues, and group rides. Please give our group any feedback that you have. You may call or e-mail me directly or respond to the group. Thanks for your help! — Darcie Mersereau 255-3389 dm20@cornell.edu |
