As Co-VP Racing, I'd like to bring up for our pondering: Tuesday/Thursday rides: The participants are for the most part responsible cyclists, but I would like to see greater attention to how we relate to automobile traffic. Riders standing on the road at the start/finish of the TT, riding more than two aside, swarming around cars at intersections etc do not present an image to the general community that benefits our sport. The partially deserved bad reputation cyclists get does us great harm when we have to go to the State Police and complain about some menacing redneck; the response is all too often along the lines of "what did you do to provoke him?". Junior racing: At the Binghamtom meeting, we learned that the main reason there were no junior races at the Empire State Games was that there were too few junior female riders, and that NYS policy prohibits promoting only male sporting events. The USCF folks told us that it's the problem of the local clubs, not the national organization. While their tone was somewhat beligerent, there is truth in the observation. If you know of any kids, especially girls, who like biking, encourage them to do it. If we don't make a concerted effort to welcome young riders into the sport, we're going to get the point where the average age of the Tuesday night racers is 80, and the average speed is 8 mph.
