A Free Adult Bike-Mechanics Course A free adult bike-mechanics course at Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles (RIBs) will start the first Tuesday of each month at 309 S. Corn Street. The course consists of eight meetings over four weeks, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Makeup classes are held Wednesday evenings. Preregistration is encouraged. It is hoped that graduates will stay involved as volunteers, but there is no commitment. The course covers troubleshooting; overhauling; adjusting bearing systems (bottom bracket, headset, and wheel hubs) and cable systems (brakes and derailleurs); wheel truing; bike frame; and helmet fit. There is no fee for the course, although a donation of $25 is suggested for those who graduate and enjoy it. There is an eight-hour service requirement in the RIBs program. This is a great time to practice newly acquired skills and explain concepts to other participants in the program. Graduates earn 45 credit hours in the RIBs program (enough for multiple refurbished bicycles, or one really nice one). Please consider getting involved in this course, and tell anyone you know who might be interested about it. Any questions? Call me at 256-5355. Please note: this course may not be offered after the month of April — so if you’re interested, get involved now! — Jonathan Talbot, Program Coordinator Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles (RIBs), a program of Southside Community Center 309 S.
