Hammond Hill, Maps, Orienteering

As Jon Sundquist has mentioned, there is an existing 3-color orienteering map of Hammond Hill at a scale of 1:20,000 which was produced by Central New York Orienteering several years ago. It shows quite a lot of trails in the area in addition to the ones which have been specifically flagged for ski-touring. We still have quite a number of these old maps, and would be happy to sell them at a price of $3 each. They were intended basically for ski orienteering, but are quite nice for on or off trail hiking, and would presumably also be useful for activities like mountain biking or horseback riding. And as Jon also mentioned, we will be having a major two-day orienteering meet at Hammond Hill on the weekend of May 4-5, 1996, where we will be unveiling our new 5-color 1:15,000 scale map of the area. Running through the woods with a map and compass is a lot of fun as an occasional alternative to being out on the roads with a bike, and it's well worth a try. And as an added bonus, you get to keep the map.

Send me some e-mail either if you would like to buy a copy of the old map, or if you would like an entry blank for the orienteering meet in May. And if you would like some more information about orienteering in this area, check our Web page for an event schedule and contacts. We'll be having one or two events in the general area every month from now till the resumption of skiing season.
