The FLCC is now in its second year on the Internet. Last year e-mail was the innovation; this year we are established on the World Wide Web as well. E-mail Last year we started the e-mail mailing list, FLCC@cycling.org. It quickly drew a lot of members locally to exchange plans for rides, commentary on past rides, and a generous amount of idle cycling-related chatter. But the mailing list has brought our club into a wider circle as well. People who search the internet for information about cycling now encounter the FLCC listed among other cycling organizations on the internet. As a result we have had list subscribers from Australia, Finland, Canada and other faraway places. Several families planning vacations in the Ithaca area found us last summer and e-mailed questions about cycling and camping facilities. And adjoining clubs have learned more about us and initiated joint projects (see the item from Rochester in this newsletter). If you have access to e-mail, we urge you to sign up. (If you don't know how lists work, send a note: ozolins@oa.ithaca.edu). To subscribe to the list, send an e-mail message to majordomo@cycling.org with just the words subscribe flcc in the body of the message. Nothing in the subject line. You will get a confirmation message from the computer giving you some info about the list and how to talk to it. Then you can proceed to use the list. To post a message, send it to flcc@cycling.org If you need any help or clarification, give me a call. World Wide Web The FLCC is to be found on the web at http://lightlink.com/mclark. As the address might suggest, this website is being made available to us by Matt Clark. In addition to providing the most draftable wheel in the Finger Lakes region, Matt has put together a web page for us, complete with backgrounds and graphics and cross-links. It really is the most immediate way of getting information about the club. For example, the ride calendar published in this newsletter has been on the web page for several weeks. We expect to keep it updated throughout the year, as well as providing last minute notices and corrections. The FLCC web page also has a photo gallery, currently featuring the complete digital photographic works of world-traveler Phil Davis: two color photos from his trip to France. As we get better at this, it will be a great way to share info and images. Through this page, folks with network access will be able to read this newsletter (for whatever reasons may aflict them), check on our calendar, maybe consult maps of our routes, and who knows what else. So, stay tuned. Andrejs |
