Notes from Mount Pleasant

The FLCC bike show-and-tell was a success, with a full house of people and bikes ranging from the French stable (toute francaise) of Don Andersen to the German–Italian offerings of Chuck Greene. The English were represented as well. The best "moment in time" was the classic Schwinn of Steve Bowman, complete with an article on the innovative construction method of the Schwinn’s of that time.

We also had a modern moment, when I was showing off a really cool paint job on a new frame. Onlooker Don Williams wasn’t at all dazzled by the special paint—it turns out that he was head of the division that created the paint in the first place! So he gave us a description of how the paint was created and how it works. The pigment is only $2,100/lb and the paint is only $500/pt. Fortunately, a little bit goes a long way. So we all learned a few new things and enjoyed an otherwise dull, rainy day.

I received a request from a cycling friend in the Rochester area who is looking for one more rider to complete a team in the 24 Hours of Canaan. She is an excellent road rider, a fun person, and would most likely be good company to suffer with. If you are interested in joining her team, contact : Beth Burchill at DROWSYDOL@aol.com

I have also received information from other friends in the Rochester area who won a downhill ski-package at Sugarloaf Ski Area in Maine for five days of skiing plus free condo and other stuff. It’s supposed to be worth well over $1,000. The problem is, they don’t ski. They’ll sell it for $500-600. If you’re looking for a ski vacation for spring break, let me know and I’ll pass their phone number along to you.
