NESTS Needs Your Help We are members of the Northeast Subarea Transportation Study (NESTS) working group. The NESTS project is a multi-modal transportation study for the Ithaca–Tompkins area. Our goal is to identify any transportation problems in the study area, which includes areas northeast of Ithaca, specifically parts of Caroline, Danby, Dryden, Town of Ithaca, Lansing, and Cornell. Our working group will make recommendations to the client committee, comprising members of the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council, to help guide them in allocating ISTEA funds in a way that is responsive to public needs. This process will take about a year to complete. At this point, we are in the problem-identification phase. Soon we will announce dates and locations for the first round of public meetings, which will serve as an opportunity for refining problems and finding possible solutions. The working group comprises 16 people who represent a wide range of interests. The people working on this study are serious about planning for the future of intermodal transportation. We feel particularly responsible to ensure that the concerns of the cycling community are heard and represented in this process, and we will keep you abreast of progress and opportunities to provide input. Right now, we would like to hear from anyone who has encountered a chronic traffic problem and wishes that someone in a position to resolve that problem could hear about it. This could include issues of safety, (i.e., no pedestrian crossing where needed, road shoulders disappear), traffic-law enforcement problems, excessive delays at traffic controls, or any concern related to public or private transportation.
