From the President

Thanks to all for the great turnout of volunteers at the New York State Time Trial. The Weather God gave us a window to race in and all the racers managed to stay dry. Congratulations to Glenn Swan for a well-run race (and for a fine win) and big thanks to Dave Ruppert for organizing the volunteers. The next club race will be the Cascadilla Hill Climb, so get your legs ready for that. We hope to have a repeat of the cyclocross shortly afterward. (Anyone interested in organizing a cyclocross race or helping out, please contact Glenn Swan, 277-0495.)

If you ordered a FLCC club jersey and haven’t picked it up yet, give me a call (273-0779) and make arrangements to do so. We now have about 50 members riding in club jerseys, and they
sure do look sharp. I have only a few medium-size jerseys left, for $45.00.

Club members Blaine Chamberlain and Mark Sheehan are busy riding qualifiers for the Paris–Brest–Paris event next year. Mark has already done two of those rides, along with a few Boston–Montreal–Boston rides. I told him that I can’t even imagine the distances that he is talking about. For those unfamiliar with this ride (race), it is held every four years in France. The distance is 750 miles, all at one time. Riders go off in waves according to their expected finish time: 80, 84, or 90 hours. You ride with lights and most of what you need, although stopping for a wine or cognac break is permissible. The only way to get in the race is to ride qualifiers in the two years prior to the race. The qualifiers are 200K, 400K, and 600K. Think about Blaine and Mark doing those distances and speeds the next time you struggle through a century…

And speaking of long-distance rides, make sure that you’re getting your legs ready for our long ’round-the-lake rides. The Seneca and Cayuga Lake rides are coming up quick (see the schedule to the left), and they generally are the longest of our season. The beer and sausage at the Italian–American festival in Wat-kins Glen after the Seneca Lake ride will taste much better if you put in the training miles now. So, I hope to see you out on the roads!
