President’s Message

The club’s February board of directors meeting was productive in planning for the upcoming cycling year. Matt Clark, our webmaster, was un-able to attend but has updated the club web page. Give it a look, and if you have any comments you may contact Matt at: mclark@lightlink.com

Plans for the Hollenbeck Spring Classic, our annual race, are well underway, with Racing VP Don Andersen in control. If you indicated on your membership application that you can help, you will be getting a call from him. The race is May 3, in and around Virgil. Our Sunday tour that day will start after the race from Hollen-beck’s Cider Mill, about 12:30 pm, to give all the race-day volunteers a chance to ride.

Duncan Callaway, who is an FLCC member and Cornell-team rider, filled us in on Cornell’s race, also in Virgil. It will be on April 12 (Easter). We hope to have some club members to help as corner marshals. (See the back of the enclosed membership form for volunteer information.)

Glenn Swan has received approval for the FLCC to host this year’s New York State Time Trial, in June. Planning has started and Glenn needs help with this race. Stop by his shop or give him a call if you can volunteer: 277-0495.

The jersey orders are coming in. The cutoff date for ordering has been extended to March 23, but that’s it: later than March 23 will be too late. If you want to wear the FLCC jersey this year, there is an order blank inside this newsletter.

The "Share the Road" bumper stickers that are showing up in Ithaca are sponsored by the FLCC and local bike shops. (You may have seen the front-page article in the March 10 Ithaca Journal.) New and renewing FLCC members will receive one with their membership cards.

Our new newsletter editor, Fred Conner, has taken over those duties from Andrejs. (Andrejs was "promoted" to Touring VP.) After all the years that Andrejs managed the newsletter, it is amazing that he was always able to bring a great deal of enthusiasm to that project. The club owes Andrejs much thanks for all his hard work on the newsletter, the real "life blood" of the club.

Now, Fred is looking for input; send him all your cycling news and announcements: flc2@
 cornell.edu or 110 Columbia St., Ithaca, 14850.

Just as we’re all grateful for Andrejs’ hard work with the newsletter, on behalf of the club
I offer thanks to Phil Davis, Touring VP for the past several years. Now "retired," Phil did a fine job of keeping us active and entertained on Sundays, and he almost single-handedly created the maps that kept us on track. Thanks, Phil.

 Looking Back, Planning Ahead

It’s March, the weather has offered hints of springtime, and the FLCC is getting ready to roll. On Sunday, March 8, members were treated to the annual bike "show and tell" at Glenn Swan’s. Don Andersen brought a couple of his lovingly restored road bikes and Steve Bowman brought a fine Schwinn cruiser from his youth. Those and other great classics were enjoyed by the 15 or so enthusiastic "watchers." Later that same Sunday it was on to Touring VP Andrejs Ozolins’ house for mapping out additional routes for the club’s Sunday rides. (We also knocked off a large pot of great chili; thanks, Diana!) So far it looks like we’ll have a good, larger set of Sunday rides and a few longer tours, including some out-of-town and overnight opportunities. Andrejs is looking in particular for new routes, leaders, and general help in planning. If you may be a regular Sunday rider, now is the best time to give your input.

Elsewhere in this newsletter you’ll find reports on the upcoming FLCC Hollenbeck and Cornell cycling-team races. Both events need volunteer help. Volunteering is easy, as the enclosed sheet explains.

Finally, it’s time to renew your membership or to become one of our club’s newest members. So far we’ve received renewals from about one-fourth of last year’s members. The modest dues pay for the newsletter, so if you don’t renew or join, we can’t mail you the newsletter. Soon we’ll purge the mailing list of all non-renewed members. You know you can’t live without the FLCC newsletter, so send in your dues! Use the handy form enclosed. Remember, this year we’ll also be mailing a "Share the Road" bumper sticker to all club members when they renew.

 Dan Fravil, FLCC President
