Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles — How You Can Help Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles (RIBs), the nonprofit bicycle program of Southside Community Center, is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first summer-long youth bicycle-mechanics courses. The number of youth participants aged 9 to 15 years old who finished the challenging six- or eight-meeting programs is yet to be tallied, but at least 50 youths learned bicycle mechanics and physics in a structured setting provided by RIBs. The courses covered hub, bottom bracket, headset, brake, and shifting overhauls and adjustments within a physics context; bike and helmet fit; and other selected topics. The students who completed the courses were rewarded with refurbished and safety-checked bicycles, helmets, and other free accessories. RIBs also offered a walk-in program used by about 150 area youth this summer. RIBs is seeking financial sponsors for next summer’s programs, so that it may continue to offer and improve its youth- development efforts at no cost to those participants, most of whom are from low- income families. Any adult riders who want to promote cycling and help provide a fun summer opportunity for area youth can easily do so by making a tax-deductible contribution to RIBs. Tax-deductible donations of $10, $25, and more will make a big difference for this small yet vital community program. For more information, call 256-5355; write: RIBs, 309 S.
