Rick Gray Dear Cyclists, As many of you know, City Alderman Rick Gray drowned in a canoeing accident in May. It is difficult enough to mourn the loss of a great person, but we are also mourning the loss of the single most supportive person we had in City Hall regarding bicycle issues. Some of you may not be aware of what an incredible ally Rick was for the city’s Bike Advisory Council (BAC) and the Ithaca Bike Plan. He had been diligently attending BAC meetings, both as a member and as a liaison from Common Council. He had been lobbying the City Planning Board in support of the Bike Plan, and advising many of us on how to deal with City Hall so that our voices might be heard. His was a valuable voice on Common Council in support of both protecting our cherished environment and creating decent infrastructure for cycling. Rick was a genuine environmentalist — one who literally "walked his talk." We shall miss him immensely. There will be an open memorial service for Rick in Stewart Park, at the main pavilion, on Saturday, June 13, at 7:00 pm. —Yarrow Nelson |
