Sodus trip ... and Vermont and Maine Ami Kadar Hi everybody! I have two other suggestions for weekend trips. Fourth of July Trip The first one is, for a long weekend in Vermont. I’ve been in touch with some people who own The Vermont House. If we got a group together, we could rent it for about $30 per person for three nights. I was there several years ago with an AMC group for a biking weekend, and it was great. The house is very nice, but rustic. That is, accommodations are bunkbeds in about 7–8 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms with showers. It sleeps about 30. It has a big livingroom (with TV and VCR, if I remember correctly), separate dining room, and a large kitchen People can do their own cooking, or there are several restaurants in the nearby villages. It’s located in the village of Proctorsville, on Rt 131 off Rt 103 and I-91, and a five minute drive from Ludlow and Okemo Mountain. It’s a pretty, quiet little village. The house has a nice frontporch, good-size backyard, and a large garage for bike storage/repair shop. I still have the packet of 15 or so rides AMC put together for us. The rides vary from 20 miles to 87 and 103 miles, so there’s something for everyone. I had some lovely rides up there (I guess most of us know how pretty Vermont is.) There’s, of course, also great hiking in nearby Green Mountain National Forest. So— would people be interested in this? I talked to Phil, and we thought the 4th of July weekend would be good. My preference would be to arrive Thursday nite and leave Sunday, but I guess I’d settle for a Friday arrival if that’s the concensus (or maybe I’ll go up early by myself.) If we all chipped in, I’d volunteer to shop for a 4th of July picnic for us all. I hope you’re interested. Let me know. I’m guessing on the driving time from Ithaca: 5 hours? Labor Day Trip The second suggestion is a similar one but for The Maine House in Bryant Pond near Bethel on Rt 26 in Maine. It’s a similar setup to the Vt House but sleeps 24 people in two to four-person bedrooms. It has a large, screened/glassed in porch for eating, large livingroom and very modern kitchen. It’s located on a Lake Christopher and has a dock, dinghy, windsurfer, nice swimming and a large lawn down to the lake. It’s a little bit more expensive than the Vt House, about $45 for 3 days (!!). Same set-up for food; people can cook their own or go out; there are several places to choose from. I did more hiking than biking when I was here (it’s close to the White Mountain National Forest) but took a couple of nice bike rides. The owners have put together several bike tours for the guests, which we could use as a starting point. And I’m sure nobody objects if some people take a hike instead. Driving time, about 7 hours? Friday, August 29 to Monday, September 1st. Again, I’d be willing to organize a cookout. (Or Saturday to Tuesday?) I think it’d be a lot of fun to get a big group together and hope we can do it. Let me know. You can call me at: 257-3486. Ami |
