Last spring there was a lot of enthusiasm for organizing club trips — driving to an interesting place and then taking day trips by bike. Of the many suggestions, only one actually took place; but that trip to Ludlow, Vermont, was so enjoyable to those who participated that it seems we should not only try to repeat that experience but organize some additional trips as well. At the March 8 meeting, I’d like those interested in this sort of cycling to bring suggestions or simply come to discuss participating.

 I’ve tried to identify opportunities for such trips, and so far can offer three likely candidates.

On the weekend of June 27–28 there will be a gathering of touring cyclists on the Bruce Peninsula in Canada. I’m planning to go up as early as possible on Friday of that week, maybe even Thursday, in order to have more time in what I’ve heard is a remarkably beautiful place. I hope to have company on what’s admittedly a long drive. Accomodation will probably be camping.

Somewhere around Memorial Day, the Vermont Great Rivers Century will be held again. It’s hard to commit to it without a firm date, but as soon as it’s announced I’ll let people know. It seemed like a very good early season destination because of the excellent hiking alternatives in case of bad cycling weather.

My brief visit to Ottawa by bike last summer convinced me that we simply must go there not only to take the great rides in the city and across the river in Quebec, but even more to experience what it’s like to ride in a city friendly to bikes. This would also be a good early-season trip because of the many things to do in the city.

The sorts of rides I’ve thought about have been to places with good accomodations. There aren’t that many hostels in this country; but Ludlow and Ottawa both have excellent ones. The Ottawa hostel is a thing to visit in its own right — it is in what used to be the Nicholas Street Jail.
