1996 will be a great year for touring. The long and dark winter months have been spent collaborating with other board members to create a greater variety of rides for this upcoming season. I've worked hard to increase the variety of rides so that no one blows a sprocket when someone suggests "...ummmm, how about Speedsville again". I've also been in touch with the Rochester and Onondaga clubs who seem quite keen to do group rides. Look forward meeting a few new faces this summer. Both Long and Short To accommodate both novice riders and experienced road-racers, I've built in both long and short options for many of the rides. Our goal is to gradually build up our endurance to complete the Cayuga and Seneca round-the-lake rides by late August. We should be in top shape by the end of the season to join Mike Dolenga in his "Mile High Ride". Three members will be turning 50 this July (that's years _ not chainring size), and we'll be celebrating with a fine bottle of Chardonnay at Wagner's Vineyards. Bring out your nose for vinifera, since we plan to incorporate a few palatable trips this year. Database of Tours As a relatively new resident of this neck-of-the-woods, I have relied very heavily on the knowledge of veteran riders to come up with tours. Some members have been members of the FLCC since the last glacier retreat and have intimate knowledge of the region's topography. Capturing that knowledge in a database and making it accessible to new members seemed like a good idea. Over the endless winter months I solicited the help of these veteran riders and extracted, among other things, numerous descriptions of rides which I used to create a grand database of tours! No longer will we have to reinvent the wheel each and every season to come up with great rides. Maps After creating our FLCC database of rides, I quickly realized that we required a visual element. "The map is not the territory", but it sure is a darn good tool for navigating a network of secondary roads! Still having delusions of grandeur (or merely workaholic tendencies), I spent a few weeks tracing maps on my apartment floor. 20 maps later and callouses on both elbows and knees, I created a booklet of maps that compliment our ride database. These booklets will be sent to each current member of the FLCC. Each map contains just enough information to make riding easy without bringing along a huge road atlas, and contains full ride descriptions from the database of tours. Touring Calendar on the Web Those with Web access will also be happy to find our touring calendar in electronic form. The calendar contains 2 months of riding, and include start locations, distances, elevations, and contact information. From the FLCC Web page (http://www.lightlink.com/mclark/), select "touring". I always welcome suggestions for rides and volunteers to lead them. |
