Great Vermont Rivers Century: May 17

In May last year several FLCC cyclists (along with friends and family members) drove to Ludlow, Vermont, and participated in the Great Vermont Rivers Century, a benefit for a local youth-services organization. As one of those riders I can say it was a fun and relaxing trip. So much so, in fact, that plans are underway to go back this year, on the weekend of May 15–17. Non- cycling companions will be joining the group again this year and finding other things to do during the ride.

The event (it’s not a race!) offers ride options of 25, 50, and 100 miles. The registration fee for any ride is $15, and that includes refreshment breaks along the route, a free water bottle, and good food at the finish line (a post-ride picnic).

The courses comprise scenic loops along some of Vermont’s nicest river sections, with as few tough climbs as are possible in the Green Mountain State. For example, the century has just three long climbs, two of which are within the first 40 miles.

Our group stayed at a hostel within walking distance of downtown Ludlow for $12 per person per night, and that accommodation and price are also available this year. Food was both on one’s own and communal: together we prepared a huge, delicious pasta dinner on Saturday, the evening before the ride. Transportation to and fro was car-pool style, and we were all in Vermont by Friday evening, although a Saturday arrival is feasible. We all returned home on Sunday after the ride.

If you’re interested in or simply curious about joining FLCC members, family, and friends for a weekend of riding and fun in Vermont, you may notify Andrejs Ozolins by phone or e-mail, or send this coupon to him at: 733 Cliff Street, Ithaca, NY 14850 (272-0764; ozolins@oa.ithaca.ed).—F.L.C.
