Vermont’s Great Rivers Century: May 17

In late May last year several FLCC cyclists (along with friends and family members) drove to Ludlow, Vermont, and participated in the third annual Great Rivers Century, a benefit for Wind-sor County Youth Services. As one of those riders I can say it was a fun and relaxing trip. So much so, in fact, that plans are underway to go back this year, on the weekend of May 15–17.

The event (it’s not a race!) offers ride options of 25, 50, and 100 miles. The registration fee for any ride was $15 in 1997, and that included welcome refreshment breaks along the route and good food at the finish line.

The course comprises scenic loops along some of Vermont’s nicest river sections, with as few tough climbs as are possible in the Green Mountain State. For example, the century has just three long climbs, two of which are within the first 40 miles.

Last year our group stayed at a hostel (within walking distance of downtown Ludlow) for less than $15 per person per night. Food was both on one’s own and communal: together we prepared a huge, delicious pasta dinner the evening before the ride. Transportation to and fro was car-pool style, and we were all in Vermont by Friday evening, although a Saturday arrival is feasible. We all returned home on Sunday after the ride.

If you already know that you’re interested in joining other FLCC members for a weekend of riding and whatever in Vermont, you may contact me. Otherwise, more details should be available in the April FLCC newsletter.
