In May 1997 a group of four women decided to dedicate some of the nice weekday hours to a bit of touring. Sarah Huber, Corien Bakermans, Brandy Salmon, and I were inspired by Annette Hanson’s initiative to start a women’s cycling club. We agreed to cycle hard — but not at a competitive level — every Wednesday afternoon.

After several weeks of excellent rides, we all decided to invite any interested cyclists to join our rides (and not just women riders), as long as the casual, non-race atmosphere could be preserved. The Wednesday bike group instantly went from four riders to as many as 25 per week.

We will continue the tradition this year. As soon as there’s sufficient afternoon light for safe riding and the temperature warms somewhat, we will begin our Wednesday evening rides again. The group will start in the parking lot across from the Dairy Bar on the Cornell Campus (we can change that later if the rider demographics change).

Each ride is a different loop of about 20 to 30 miles, all over the Ithaca area. At the start of the season the rides begin at 5:00 pm, but as we get more light we’ll push the starting time back to 5:30 and then, eventually, to 6:00 pm (to encourage as much after-work participation as possible).

All are welcome to join us; just be prepared to relax and enjoy the rides.
