Message from the President
As President, I have one very important function every fall: finding
candidates for next year's club officers. Of course, the first thing I
do is to see if I can get the current year's officers to serve again.
Often people are willing but would be just as happy to see new blood in
the club's administration. And occasionally someone has gotten too busy
and cannot continue in an office. It really is important to get new people
involved in running the club. New officers mean new enthusiasm and new
ideas. So if you are interested in being a club officer, please let me
know. Give me a call (273-7064) or send me an email (davidr@orie.cornell.edu).
There's a joke being emailed around about a new element, "administratium."
Administratium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons
and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. Since
administratium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected
because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. There's
more to the joke, but you get the point. In large organizations, administrators
are generally the butt of jokes. There seems to be more and more of them
every year with less and less real workers to get things done. A small,
all-volunteer organization like the FLCC is quite different. The number
of officers is small and constant and it is the officers plus a handful
of other volunteers who do most of the work. This means that getting new
people to help make the club work is essential.
The club now mails newsletters only four times a year, so we would like
to mail 2003 membership cards with the winter newsletter that will come
out in late January or early February. We have enclosed a 2003 membership
application. There's no rush to get it in, but please do so by early January
if you would like your membership card with the winter newsletter. Otherwise,
you will get your membership card with the spring newsletter.
Blaine Chamberlaine expressed an interest in redesigning a club jersey
and putting together an order this winter. As details become clear I will
put out an announcement on our electronic mailing list and on our web
site.
Although fall will soon be here, there's plenty of the season left. We
will have the Cascadilla Hill Climb and the Buck Hill cyclo-cross race
again next year. Sunday tours are scheduled through November. The Tuesday
night races (not club sponsored) will morph into cyclo-cross
practice at Mt. Pleasant. The Monday mountain bike rides at Swam Cycles
will continue all winter, with lights after the end of daylight savings
and perhaps converting into snowshoe hikes when the snow gets deep. Hard-core
mountain bike addicts can again enjoy the "night club" rides at Connecticut
Hill on Thursdays.
