The Long Valley

12 miles, circles the valley between Brooktondale and Wilseyville. Easy.

This ride has a minimum of hill climbing, an unusual thing in this part of the world. People who are out of shape, uncertain of their riding skills, or worried about their stamina can safely consider this ride -- the whole ride is only 12 miles (easier than you might think!), but there are two potential shortcuts to make the ride even shorter if you feel the need.

The recommended start is in Brooktondale. From Ithaca, take NY 79 east about 4 miles; turn right on Brooktonale Rd. and proceed about 2 miles. Probably the best place to park would be the Brooktondale post office, but a place at the roadside is also ok. The directions in the cue-sheet start at the corner of Brooktondale Rd and Valley Rd, across from the (only) store.

At mile Turn On this road Go
0   Valley Rd follows the creek, curves up into the quarry and then swings left as Perkins Rd 0.9
0.9 L Caroline Depot Rd 0.3
1.2 R White Church Rd follows the eastern side of the valley. You get lovely views of the hills and fields. In the past, a railway ran down the center of the valley; today, the Finger Lakes Trail follows part of that railway bed in crossing this valley near Ridgeway Rd. 4.0
2.3   Option:   Belle School Rd -- if you turn right on this road, you can cross the valley and turn right on Coddington Rd to finish the ride via Middaugh Rd (see below). This would give you a ride of 7.2 mi.
3.2   Option:   Ridgeway Rd, -- turning right here you can cross to Coddington Rd for a ride of 9.1 mi.
5.2 R Coddington Rd is more wooded as it follows the western side of the valley north. 4.5
9.7 R Middaugh Rd. Follow the curve to the left as this road descends into the valley 1.3
