Please take care to follow a map or knowledgeable leader at the southern end of the lake on this ride. A detail map is provided. This is a very pretty bit of the route, but very frustrating if you're lost. So, print out the detail map if you don't care for frustration.

[Scott Zimmerman submits these additional maps: Skaneateles Tricky Parts (pdf, ~420kb)]

The ride starts and ends at the Colonial Inn at the bend in NY 41A near Bear Swamp. Turn right out of the parking lot heading north toward Skaneateles. Continue for 15 miles.

If you can spot it, turn right on Golf Course Rd just before Skaneateles. This is a more pleasant approach for the last mile into the village. If you miss it, never mind -- turn right on US 20 when you get there, just a mile further.

A break in the village at the head of the lake is customary.

To continue, head east out of town to the intersection of NY41 and turn right (south). In about 7.5 miles, in Borodino, you can depart from the state highway for a few miles by turning right on Nunnery Rd, a pretty road that follows the hillside just below NY 41. In about 2.5 miles, take a right at the intersection with Woodworth Rd and follow that until it climbs back up to NY 41. Another 7 miles brings you to Scott where you turn right to follow the detailed map across the valley.

This part is where folks get confused and lost. If you have an odometer, note the mileage at the corner in Scott.

  • In a half mile, bear left on Grinell Rd.
  • Another half mile comes to a T on County Rd 100, W. Scott Rd. Turn right.
  • Follow CR 100, which will become CR 165, Gulf Rd.
  • The tricky place is at Case Rd., which you do not want to follow. The junction comes at an uphill place about 2.3 miles from the turnoff in Scott; going straight ahead would put you on Case going up quite steeply, so turn right onto Bear Swamp Rd.
  • From there, it's straightforward to wind up on Iowa Rd after Bear Swamp becomes dirt and veers off to the right. Iowa Ts into 41A and the finish is just a short way to the right.

Riding back to Dryden

The nicest route back is to go north of the start/finish on 41A to Sayles Corners Rd (about a mile from the Colonial). Turn left and follow the road down to 38A and Moravia. From there go south through Groton and Freeville to Dryden. About 26 miles
